TUL researchers wrap up a fruitful exchange at the University of Zaragoza

As part of the SustDesignTex short-term staff exchange program, seven researchers from Lodz University of Technology (TUL) participated in a two-month exchange at the University of Zaragoza in Spain. The program offered a rich blend of research, collaboration, and cultural exchange, leading to remarkable achievements and strengthened partnerships.

During their stay, the researchers were engaged in cutting-edge projects that tackled sustainability and advanced materials. These microprojects included the design and development of firefighter drone components using sustainable composite materials, conducting a comprehensive Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) of natural fiber-reinforced composites, and creating innovative thermochromic and radiochromic textile sensors. The hands-on laboratory work was a key highlight, fostering skill development and contributing to advancements in sustainable technology.

The exchange program wasn’t limited to research alone. The team actively participated in various academic and industry-related events. They joined the University of Zaragoza’s vibrant "Race for Science" initiative, visited local companies, and held several meetings with university stakeholders. These meetings focused on strengthening ties between the University of Zaragoza and TUL, particularly in the areas of staff and student exchanges and collaborative research projects.

In addition to the TUL researchers, Rebecca Emmerich from ITA, RWTH Aachen University, joined the exchange for a few days. Her participation added a multidisciplinary dimension to the program, particularly through her attendance at a specialized LCA training session led by experts at the University of Zaragoza. Her involvement further enriched the collaborative and educational aspects of the exchange.

As the exchange drew to a close, the researchers prepared a farewell presentation to share their experiences and results. This hybrid-format event included representatives from ITA, RWTH Aachen University, and the University of Borås in Sweden, underscoring the broad collaborative scope of the program.

The success of this staff exchange was made possible by the unwavering support of the SustDesignTex team at the University of Zaragoza. Special thanks go to Prof. David Ranz, leader of the SustDesignTex project at UNIZAR, and the School of Engineering and Architecture for their hospitality and guidance. The TUL researchers also expressed their gratitude to the scientific community at the University of Zaragoza for creating a welcoming and collaborative environment.

This fruitful exchange not only advanced research efforts but also strengthened bonds between institutions and researchers. The TUL team looks forward to continuing their collaboration with the University of Zaragoza and exploring new opportunities for innovation and knowledge exchange.
